ORLANDO, Fla. (June 5, 2024) – Seven-year-old Elian Martinez, from Moca, Puerto Rico, was told he could never pursue sports. He was born with a short Achilles tendon, making it difficult for him to walk. 

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, allowing people to lift their foot off the ground to walk. If the tendon is too short, it can prevent the heel from touching the ground, which can cause walking issues.

Martinez underwent surgery to correct the issue, which is when doctors gave him the heartbreaking news about not playing sports.

“Despite his daunting prognosis, Elian refused to accept defeat,” Martinez’s basketball coach, Peter Porto, said. “Through sheer determination and unwavering resolve, he embarked on a journey of rehabilitation and self-discovery. With each step forward, he reclaimed control over his body and his destiny.”

Martinez defied his doctor’s expectations and fell in love with the game of basketball when he was five. 

“The journey was very challenging, filled with obstacles and setbacks,” Martinez said. “There were times when I felt very sad and discouraged. The progress was difficult and slow, but I never gave up.”

Now, Martinez plays for the Los Lobos 8U team, which competed at the 2024 AAU Memorial Classic at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

“I’m incredibly excited to have made it here [to Disney] and it’s a dream come true,” Martinez said. “Thank you to my mom and dad for providing me with the therapies and support I needed. I’m determined to keep improving, and I am here to have fun and play. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I am ready for whatever comes next.”

Porto said that to those who know Martinez, he’s more than just a player, he’s an inspiration.

“He stands as a shining example of perseverance and resilience. Not only is he the star player on his team, but he has also risen to become one of the top players in Puerto Rico,” Porto said. “His story serves as a beacon of hope for anyone facing adversity, reminding us all that with grit, determination, and the unwavering support of those around us, anything is possible.”
