Longtime AAU Volunteer, Lewis Owens, Passes

Lewis Owens, Indiana AAU District Governor and AAU Life Member, devoted his life to youth sports for more than 50 years

ORLANDO, Fla. -- It is with great sadness that the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) shares the passing of Lewis Owens, a longtime AAU volunteer, on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

Lewis dedicated more than 50 years of his life to the AAU. He served as the Indiana AAU District Governor for 16 years, from 2006 to 2022, and prior to that, worked as AAU’s Executive Director for many years when the AAU headquarters were based in Indianapolis, Indiana.  

In 2021, during the 127th AAU National Convention in Orlando, Florida, he received the Veterans Bowl Award for his 50 years of service. This year, at the 128th AAU National Convention, he was inducted as a Life Member of the AAU during the Pam Marshall Life Member Luncheon.

In 2012, Lewis was awarded his 35 years of service pin. That year, he was also inducted into the AAU Volunteer Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor is given out to those dedicated men and women who devoted their lives to making the Amateur Athletic Union the continued leader in the amateur sports industry.

In addition to his love of his amateur sports, Lewis was a safety inspector and taught flight safety with the Federal Aviation Administration for more than 30 years.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Linda (Gress) Owens; children Lewis “Forrest” (wife Anna) Owens, Joy Owens (husband Kevin) Arauz, Matthew (wife Danielle) Owens, and Heather Owens; and six grandchildren: Olivia, Charlie, Jori, Margot, Lewis, Eleanor.

Funeral Arrangements:
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the Boone-Hutcheson Cemetery. A time of fellowship will be held following services at the Putnamville Baptist Church, Putnamville, IN.
