QUEENS, N.Y.  (March 7, 2023)
– The AAU Urban Initiative was proud to sponsor a free volleyball clinic for middle school girls at Maspeth High School in Queens, New York. With 80 girls participating, it was an amazing turnout with athletes learning about the game and about their community.

On March 4, New York Metropolitan AAU Volleyball Director, Gerry Matacotta, ran the volleyball clinic open to all skill levels and ages. The clinic also had some experienced coaches there to provide their expertise. Head Volleyball Coach at Fairleigh Dickenson University, Karl France, and Head Volleyball Coach at Queens College, Jason Demas were in attendance to help teach the athletes about the sport.

“We are excited to have college-level coaches here at an AAU Urban Initiative clinic,” said AAU Urban Initiative lead Joe Armenio. “No matter their socio-economic circumstances, all athletes deserve access to high level instruction and training. Thank you to all the athletes who participated in this weekend’s clinic.”

The AAU Urban Initiative was created in 2015 to provide participation opportunities in urban environments that were historically underserved. The initiative partners the AAU with local government, law enforcement, faith-based groups, educational institutions and other groups to bring communities together through sports in service to America’s youth.

Athletes at the clinic got to learn on and off the court, as they learned about their community as well. Officers from the New York Police Department stopped by during lunch to speak at the clinic about what to be aware of in the community.
