The AAU Urban Initiative is proud to partner with the NYPD in the operation of the Blue Chips Basketball League throughout New York City. Our goal is to create more of these leagues for underprivileged communities throughout the nation.

The AAU Urban Initiative is proud to work with the NYPD in their operation of the Blue Chips Youth Mentoring Program. Under the direction of the NYPD, a total of 72 co-ed teams are competing in a basketball league that spans across the five (5) boroughs of New York City. Each precinct and several other commands are fielding co-ed teams with 14-year-old children. League play began last week, July 2021. The goal is that this will be the first of many such programs offering a wide variety of sports. Ultimately, not only will underserved youth gain additional participation opportunities, but this will foster positive relationships between the community, especially young people, and the police.

NYPD deeply values the role that sports play in the development of the youth. They have placed their resources behind this basketball league with the strong belief that police officers will work directly with the younger generation of many communities throughout New York City.  It is the intention of NYPD to develop a supportive setting where police officers, community leaders, and the children will all come together and play the great game of basketball. It is an example of police becoming deeply engaged in their respective neighborhoods and creating a solid foundation leading to many benefits for the community. This connection of police and youth is now needed more than ever.

The AAU is the largest youth sports organization in the United States with more than 700,000 members participating in approximately 45 sports. The AAU Urban Initiative is an important part of the AAU. Its mission is to bring sports to young people who reside in underserved and underprivileged communities. “Sports for All, Forever” has been the AAU's focus and drive since 1888. For 132 years, the AAU has worked to do whatever it can to play a positive role in every child’s life throughout the world. Working with the NYPD and its committed leaders and officers is an opportunity with which we are glad to be apart of.

AAU leadership is honored to work with the NYPD in providing this tremendous service for our children and the entire community. We believe that sports are an effective vehicle to bring people of all ages together.

The AAU Urban Initiative will be hosting a large basketball tournament, beginning later this month, throughout the New York Metropolitan area. All teams interested in competing will be accepted until max capacity is reached. For more information, contact jimfox@islandgarden.com
