BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - Grand Forks Red River's Shelby Frank didn't get to have a senior high school track and field season in North Dakota due to the coronavirus outbreak, but one of the best throwers in the state's history is still wrapping up her pre-college competition in style.
On Wednesday, Frank broke the AAU Junior Olympic Games national record in Satellite Beach, Fla., throwing 164 feet.
Frank, a University of Minnesota recruit, broke the six-year-old women's 17-18 discus record, previously held by Jessica Woodard, who had an All-American career at Oklahoma.
Frank's personal best in the discus is 169 feet, 1 inch.
Frank's winning throw Wednesday was nearly 25 feet better than second-place finisher Leia Williams of Georgia, who tossed 139-7.
The performance marked the 10th time Frank had hit the 160-foot threshold since 2017. In 2019, she hit the marker seven times overall.
Frank's throw at the Junior Olympics is the second-longest in the nation in 2020 for her age group. Makayla Long of Oregon had a throw of 166-11 on June 5.
