AAU leader elected to state office

National AAU Target Shooting Chair, Gary Eisen, elected to Michigan's House of Representatives.

Election season brought us some new faces both on the national stage and at the state level including a longtime AAU member.

Michigan AAU’s Gary Eisen was elected to the Michigan House’s 81st District back in early November. It is a two-year term in which Eisen joins 109 other state representatives to work to better Michigan schools, roads, recreation as well as work to provide robust job opportunities for those around the state and in his district.

“I ran because I just felt the need to use my work and life experience, along with my life accomplishments and put them to work in our state government.” Eisen said. “I think it’s going to be more baby steps than large leaps.”
He’s a first-time representative who has run for office in the past.

A Republican working with a Democratic Governor, Eisen is looking for way to work together and make a positive impact on the state, regardless of party affiliation.

“When I first started running, I was hoping, obviously, we’d be having a Republican governor, and it’d make it easier possibly to get things done, but it’ll be interesting now.” Eisen said. “The House is Republican, the Senate’s Republican, and then our governor is Democrat. We’re going to have to work together. If we want to get things done, we’re going to have to get along.”

Ultimately, Eisen is looking to have input on, in his words, “voting in good laws and stopping bad ones.”

Eisen has been involved with AAU for more than a decade having served as the Michigan AAU District Director for Taekwondo from 2006 – 2014 and instrumental in spearheading the addition of Target Shooting to the AAU sports program offerings.

“I plan using my position to further all amateur sports, bringing attention for the need of good fair competition for all and not just a select few.” Eisen said.  “My experience in AAU will be an asset in making the right decisions for amateur sports.  The 12 years I spent in the Tae Kwon Do program, seven years as the state sports director and now as the national chair for Target Shooting will definitely help.”

Congratulations to an AAU member making a difference in the community he serves.
