Longtime AAU volunteer passes

Longtime AAU volunteer and former AAU Gymnastics National Chair Ron Ferris passed away suddenly on Oct. 7.

Ferris opened the Ohio Gymnastics Institute in May 1986 with less than 30 students and grew the company to provide learning opportunities and physical fitness for over 700 students every week.

Heavily involved in youth gymnastics, Ferris was a member of the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors and Ohio Boys USAG State Chair from 1997 to 2011.

Ferris was AAU Gymnastics National Chair from 2010-2013. Also, he was the Lake Erie District AAU Boys Gymnastics Sport Chair and worked as a Brevet Men’s Gymnastics judge from 2000 to 2004.

He was the Meet Director for the AAU Winter Nationals, a gymnastics competition held each President’s Day Weekend.

As a competitor, Ferris lettered in gymnastics as a junior and senior at Annandale High School in Virginia and received a varsity letter all four years of college at James Madison University.

He attended the university as a walk-on and was selected as the team All Around MVP for three years and voted team captain for three years. Ferris competed at the NCAA Regional Championships in 1979 on vaulting and horizontal bar.

He has two sons, Ronald and David, both of whom competed at the NCAA level in gymnastics. Ronald attended Ohio State and became the 2005 NCAA National Champion on the horizontal bar while David went to the U.S. Naval Academy.
