SET YOUR OWN DIRECTION!

When starting a team, some of the following will need to be determined:

  • Age group - single or multiple
  • For profit or not for profit organization
  • Single season or long term program
  • An organizational document or bylaws
  • Officers or principles of the organization
  • Standards for selection of coaches
  • Standards for selection of athletes
  • Equipment needs
  • Facility needs
  • Team's AAU event schedule - from local to national
  • Insurance coverage desired
  • Team/organization name
  • AAU events the team will host
  • AAU Club Level program the team will join
  • AAU Membership category for team members - Regular or AB
  • Financial needs- total budget
  • The entry materials you need to submit to the AAU Event Operator

The information provided above are general guidlines to be determined at your discretion. The AAU does not endorse any particular organizational process or claim to have exact knowledge on how to start a team. The AAU does have some processes in place that will assist you in determining some of the above catergories.


Getting Started as a Team in the AAU is Easy.

For teams to participate in AAU events, all athletes and non-athletes (such as Administrators, Bench Personnel, Coaches, Instructors, Managers, etc.) must be AAU members. The team itself also must have a club membership.

THE AAU IS AN EVENT-DRIVEN ORGANIZATION AND DOES NOT:

  • ORGANIZE TEAMS OR ATHLETES
  • SPONSOR TEAMS OR ATHLETES
  • ENTER TEAMS OR ATHLETES INTO EVENTS
  • SELECT COACHES, ADMINISTRATORS, OR DIRECTORS FOR ATHLETES, TEAMS, CLUBS, OR ORGANIZATIONS
